What if your education could not only empower you, but also change the world? Meet Michael Ettlinger, a graduate student at the University of Michigan doing just that. With a focus on Energy Systems Engineering and a passion for environmental sustainability, Michael is transforming his entrepreneurial dreams into tangible solutions through his involvement with the Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE). Let’s dive into his inspiring journey!

Michael’s journey with the CFE began at Michigan Engineering’s Embark Fair. “My career goals have always centered around entrepreneurship, so when I saw the Center for Entrepreneurship table, I was instantly drawn in,” he recalls. After that encounter, he prioritized joining the PJTL program and pursuing the Graduate Certificate. He notes, “The classes associated with these have easily been some of my favorite classes throughout my education.”

According to Michael, entrepreneurship is all about creating a better world. He defines entrepreneurship as “searching for problems throughout day-to-day life that others may struggle with as well, and innovating potential solutions to create value for society.”

As co-lead of the Global CO2 Initiative’s Project SAPPHIRE, he’s engineering a microbial electrochemical carbon capture device to mitigate climate change. Additionally, through BLUElab’s Woven Wind team, he’s contributing to the construction of small-scale wind turbines while leading outreach initiatives for grade school children. “Throughout these many extracurricular experiences, I have cultivated substantial skills in innovation, problem-solving, and providing value where value is needed,” he shares.

Michael credits his involvement with the CFE for helping him hone in on a joyful aspect of entrepreneurship. “Innovation and entrepreneurship require working in uncharted territory, and while taking the step to set out on your own can cause feelings of fear or reluctance, overcoming this barrier has arisen as the most enjoyable part of the entrepreneurial process for me thus far,” he explains.

His journey has inspired him to launch a nonprofit aimed at connecting volunteers with local restaurants and grocery stores to donate fresh food to those in need. “I can confidently say that my involvement with the CFE has given me additional motivation and courage to go forward with this rewarding and joyful idea!”

For students considering getting involved with CFE, Michael offers this advice: “Invest 10 to 15 minutes in simply checking out the Center for Entrepreneurship’s website. It’s highly organized and details tons of chances for involvement that could prove highly valuable academically and professionally.” He also encourages students to attend info sessions and apply to opportunities that resonate with them, stating, “The CFE is great about accepting students from a wide range of programs from the Freshman to PhD level!”

Looking ahead, Michael aims to launch a for-profit venture that promotes sustainability and mitigates climate change. He’s currently focused on solidifying his nonprofit project, which connects volunteers to local food sources. “My ultimate goal is to be the founder of a profitable enterprise that simultaneously improves the health of the planet and allows me to sustain myself and my family,” he shares.
