From AI-powered apps to sustainable footwear, U-M student Hannah Bienkowski is making waves in the entrepreneurial world. As a senior Computer Science major with a knack for problem-solving and a passion for entrepreneurship, Hannah has been turning classroom lessons into real-world solutions since her first year at U-M.

A Spark of Inspiration

Hannah’s connection with the CFE began during her freshman year in ALA 223, where she met CFE instructor Eric Fretz. “His infectious energy and passion for entrepreneurship completely drew me in, igniting a spark that made me eager to dive deeper into this exciting field,” she shares. That initial introduction set the stage for her continued involvement with the CFE.

The next step in Hannah’s journey came when she enrolled in ENTR 411, taught by Grace Hsia, who became a key mentor. “Taking her ENTR 411 class was a pivotal moment for me,” says Hannah. “It not only equipped me with foundational knowledge but also helped me develop an early-stage business idea that I am excited to continue pursuing.” While she keeps the details of her idea under wraps for now, she credits Grace’s engaging teaching style and mentorship for shaping her entrepreneurial mindset.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET

For Hannah, entrepreneurship is about problem-solving, adaptability, and recognizing opportunities where others see challenges. One of her daily habits is keeping a notebook to document ideas and observations. “Every day, I strive to jot down at least one invention or improvement that catches my attention,” she explains. This practice has been instrumental in developing her creativity and fueling her proactive approach to innovation.

One example is her project, CookEase, an AI-powered cooking assistant app developed as part of her EECS 441 class. “When I saw a need for an AI-powered cooking assistant, I immediately began sketching out features and researching technologies,” Hannah shares. “Now, we’re on track to release to the iOS App Store by the spring.”

FINDING JOY IN THE PROCESS

Through her experiences with the CFE, Hannah has discovered that entrepreneurship isn’t just about success—it’s about the joy of collaboration, learning, and growth. “The excitement of taking an idea from conception to reality, particularly during brainstorming sessions and presentations, was incredibly fulfilling,” she reflects.

Hannah enjoys contributing to the U-M entrepreneurial community in many ways, including her role as an Instructional Aide for ENTR 411. “I’m thrilled to return to the CFE in a role that allows me to give back,” says Hannah. “Helping other students discover their potential and guiding them through their own entrepreneurial experiences reaffirms my belief in the power of entrepreneurship and the incredible opportunities it presents.”

Looking Ahead

Hannah’s aspirations align perfectly with her passion for innovation and technology. She hopes to work in product management, combining her technical expertise and entrepreneurial spirit to create impactful solutions. Her vision doesn’t stop there—Hannah aims to eventually launch her own business, continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

One of her exciting ventures is Solefull, a sustainable footwear company that offers a single base shoe with interchangeable designs. “With Solefull, you can express your unique style without compromising the planet,” she says. While the idea is still in its early stages, Hannah is eager to refine and develop it further.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Hannah encourages future CFE students to dive in headfirst. “Take advantage of every event, workshop, and course that the CFE offers because you never know where inspiration will strike,” she advises. “Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there—whether it’s pitching an idea or asking a mentor for advice. The entrepreneurial community at Michigan is incredibly supportive.”
