Michigan Biomedical Venture Fund (MBVF) Manager
John joins U-M after 17 years in the med-tech industry. Most recently he was the Director of Clinical Engineering at a breast cancer screening startup (Delphinus), leading the development of medical image review and analysis software. He started his career at GE Healthcare, with roles in advanced applications, clinical research, molecular imaging, and led the development of features for non-invasive coronary artery CT imaging. He worked as a Venture Associate evaluating startups for the Zell-Lurie Fund, and is pursuing a part-time MBA at U-M/Ross. John holds a BSE Electrical Engineering and MSE Biomedical Engineering and is excited to be back at U-M. Go Blue!
Outside work, you can find with his family on hikes and bike rides, playing ice hockey, coaching kids soccer, building furniture, or tackling projects on his old house. In the summer he spends as much time as he can at the tip of the pinky finger in Northport, MI.
Initially funded by a $3M gift from the Monroe-Brown Family Foundation, the Seed Fund provides necessary early-stage capital to nascent U-M biomedical start-up companies to successfully commercialize their research in the most impactful way possible. This fund bridges the gap between existing University grant programs and venture capital. With the help of an external Advisory Board, John is responsible for evaluating and making investments ($50K to $300K) in biomedical spin-outs from U-M in the domains of therapeutics, devices, diagnostics, and health IT/digital technologies. He serves as a mentor to the funded companies and supports other commercialization efforts and programs at the University.
