Studying abroad is more than just an opportunity to explore a new country; it’s a transformative experience that combines education, cultural immersion, and personal growth. For students at the Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE), the study abroad program in Scandinavia offers a unique blend of academic rigor and hands-on learning. Here are five reasons why you should consider this incredible Summer ’25 opportunity:

CFE student Dom Ross poses with fellow students and instructors.

1. Learn From Real-World Practitioners

Instructors in the DIS program in Copenhagen, Denmark, are seasoned professionals who spend their time sharing entrepreneurial expertise. These real-world practitioners bring their experience directly into the classroom, creating an unparalleled learning environment. As Priam Alataris, an Electrical Engineering student, shares:

“I would highly recommend the program in Copenhagen, Denmark. The instructors are real-world practitioners who give back to the entrepreneurship community and pass down their knowledge. Additionally, I think that the exposure to Scandinavian lifestyle, culture, and business offers an invaluable perspective that I will carry for the rest of my career and life.”

2. Gain Hands-On Experience

The program isn’t just about classroom learning; it’s about rolling up your sleeves and diving into real-world projects. Students participate in practicum (internships) that provide valuable, hands-on experiences. Anushka Acharya, a Computer Science student and current IA for ENTR 417, reflects:

“As someone who loves to travel, I always knew I wanted to study abroad. I saw the entrepreneurship work/study abroad in Copenhagen, and I really wanted to do it—not only because I wanted to learn about entrepreneurship, but because the program also included a practicum. I was really excited for the chance to get some hands-on experience. Through that study abroad and the entrepreneurship credits, I found out from Christine Gordon that I could become an IA for the CFE. I’m really glad that I did because this way I can stay involved with the CFE even after the program ended.”

3. Develop Entrepreneurial Skills

The program includes localized course experiences that mirror the CFE’s 400-level classes, and guide students through the entire process of launching a startup—from identifying a problem to creating a minimum viable product (MVP).

Dom Ross, a Summer ’24 participant, highlights the value of global entrepreneurial education:

“This class covers the entire process of creating a startup … The entrepreneurial thought process includes assessing customer interest, brainstorming solutions, taking action to address issues, thinking differently, and guiding yourself through challenges. These skills are essential for starting a business and in any professional setting where innovation and problem-solving are crucial.”

4. Immerse Yourself in Scandinavian Culture

Studying abroad in Scandinavia offers an eye-opening look into a culture known for innovation, sustainability, and a high quality of life. Dom Ross shares his perspective:

“This program has given me the chance to leave the United States for the first time and experience a new culture. What’s really struck me is how the Danish government seems to run like a startup. They’re flexible and innovative in their policy-making, especially with things like climate change and digital governance.”

5. Build Connections and Expand Your Network

One of the most rewarding aspects of studying abroad is the connections you make—both professionally and personally. Through internships tailored to their interests, students work alongside entrepreneurs and innovators, forging relationships that can last a lifetime. Dom Ross, for example, gained hands-on experience with a local initiative:

“In this program, everyone is placed in internships based on their interests. I was matched with Your Fair Share, a Copenhagen-based initiative focused on promoting fairness and sustainability across various sectors. There, I gained hands-on experience that will be invaluable to pursuing a career in that industry.”

Studying abroad in Scandinavia isn’t just about adding another line to your resume—it’s about gaining new perspectives, developing lifelong skills, and stepping out of your comfort zone. The CFE’s 6 week, 6 credit summer study abroad program with IPE is open to all U-M undergraduates. Whether you’re drawn to the entrepreneurial opportunities, the cultural immersion, or the chance to work with real-world innovators, this program has something for everyone. Ready to take the leap?
