Looking to expand your network and make meaningful connections while at U-M? The Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE) has just launched Wolverine Entrepreneurs Hub (WEhub)—a platform built specifically for students like you! Whether you want to find new professional opportunities, meet fellow Wolverines in your field, or get involved in the entrepreneurial community, WEhub has you covered.

WEhub connects you with U-M students and alumni who share your passions and goals, opening doors to mentorship, job opportunities, events, and more. Ready to take your networking game to the next level? Here’s how WEhub can help—plus five tips to help you network like a pro.

  • Find People: Want to connect with fellow Wolverines in your field? Use the People tool to search by location, sector, company, or interests. You never know who you’ll meet that can spark your next big idea.
  • Mentorship: Looking for advice? Join the mentorship program to gain insights and guidance from experienced U-M alumni across various industries. They’ve been where you are and can help you navigate your career path!
  • Jobs & Co-Founders: Check out the job board for opportunities, or connect with a potential co-founder if you’ve got a startup idea brewing. You can also post positions if you’re looking for talented peers to join your team.
  • Events: Participate in both virtual and in-person events to build your network and stay up-to-date on industry trends.
  • Groups: Join groups that match your interests or location to connect with like-minded people and receive tailored content.

WEhub is a packed with opportunities, but networking takes practice! Whether you’re looking for a mentor, a co-founder, or just want to expand your circle, developing some core networking skills can set you up for success. Here are five tips to help you get started:

1. Nail Your Elevator Pitch

When it comes to networking, it’s important to make an impression right off the bat. Come up with a short, concise, and memorable introduction that conveys your goals and relevant experience. Here’s an example:

Hello, my name is _____. I recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in _____. I recently worked on ________. I’m interested in learning more about _______. Can you tell me more about your work in this field?

Once you’ve got your pitch down, practice until it feels natural. You’ll be making stellar first impressions in no time!

2. Be Authentic

Networking isn’t just handing out business cards or making LinkedIn connections. It’s about creating real, meaningful relationships. Be yourself, show genuine interest in others, and engage in conversations that go beyond surface level. Authenticity will help you build long-lasting connections that can grow over time.

3. Get Social

Platforms like WEHub and LinkedIn are powerful tools for building your network. Make sure your profile is up to date with your skills, projects, and experiences. Join groups, follow companies, and engage with content that aligns with your goals. Sharing your own achievements or insights can also boost your visibility and attract like-minded individuals.

4. Attend Events and Get Involved

From career fairs to student organization meetings to industry talks—there are tons of opportunities on campus to meet new people! Networking in person helps you practice your skills while learning about different industries and career paths. Check out U-M and CFE events, and don’t be afraid to start a conversation with someone new. (You can start with our Open House Carnival on October 8!)

5. Follow Up

After meeting someone, send a message or email within 24 hours to thank them for their time and remind them of a specific topic you discussed. Building strong relationships doesn’t happen overnight, so keeping in touch and scheduling follow-up conversations is crucial.

Networking may feel intimidating at first, but with these tips—and some practice—you’ll build a strong network that can support your goals during your time at U-M and beyond. Remember, once a Wolverine, always a Wolverine!
